Geekery

Recently Sikorsky has been making noise about their new X2 helicopter that is supposed to break some speed records for rotary wing aircraft. Well yesterday the X2 had it's maiden flight. Aviation Week and Flight Global both reported on it, and they include photos so you can see the sleek looking bug with the co-axial rotors and the pusher prop (which I think is technically cheating).

Flight Global also reported on a saucer shaped UAV that uses the Coanda Effect to achieve lift. You can see a decent explanation of the Coanda Effect here.

Now this is not entirely an Aerospace bit of news, but it's still damn cool. Seems there was recently the first official meeting to flesh out ideas for Space Marines! Load the boys and girls into a space plane, put them on a ballistic arc, and drop Jarheads anywhere in the world in 30 minutes. Now all we need is powered armor, re-entry cocoons, and a launch bay in the space plane, and we won't even have to land the plane in hostile territory (what can I say, Heinlein had the best damn ideas!).
